Wedding Superstitions And Traditions
It was said that their power increased when a wedding was in gender.
Demons could be scared away by noise and racket. It was therefore common in midlevel times for the wedding guests to come together at the wedding couples home. The guests brought pots, plates and other objects to break and drive away the evil spirits. This was repeated at the wedding day when the couple left the party.
We recognize this custom in todays tradition of hanging cans and other objects in a string behind the wedding car.The wedding custom of carrying the bride over the threshold has its root in old belief of evil demons. The groom must carry his bride over so she can enter her new life safely. Also the wedding dress had great symbolic meaning in earlier times.
The wedding dress is without a doubt the most symbolic dress a woman can wear. The appearance of the wedding dress has changed many times in history. It is interesting to know that the traditionally white wedding dress where not that common in earlier times. During the midlevel times the white wedding dress were used more often by the social upper classes. Mainly the nobilities and members of the court. But around 1500 a.c. it became popular to be wedded in red dresses in upper class society. This trend changed again later to white.
Among the common people of Europe and Scandinavia it was tradition to wear their counties folk costumes at the wedding day.
From around 1850 and up until world war 1 it was common many places in Europe to have a black wedding dress with a white wail. It can seem like a paradox to us but in those days black where known as the typical party colour also at weddings. Not until after world war 1 did the white wedding dresses really become widely popular.
The white dress is of today the concept of a western society wedding dress. The bride colours symbolic as innocent and untouched is no longer as central. Still choosing the wedding dress for the wedding is an exciting and a highlight for the preparing bride and those close to the bride.
In the 1990 and up until now it has been more and more common to choose alternative settings for the wedding ceremony. An increasing trend is weddings at the beach. This way the bride and groom can arrange a lighter and more informal wedding where the wedding etiquettes are eased down.
The dress code to beach weddings are also more informal and makes the guests choose more freely. Nice summer dresses and simple linen suit / khaki one colour shorts could be is a possible choice. This has also lead to brides picking more informal elegant wedding dresses
